These
French doors have stained glass inserts that are private around the
outside of the stained glass design and fairly see-through in the
central part of the design, an aspect that the clients wanted for this
set of residential office doors. This design also employs some inside
corners in the design, places where an inside point is ground into the
glass where there would otherwise be an "extra" leadline touching the
place where the two perpendicular lines meet. This is hard to do, and
requires years of expertise in forming the glass pieces and
constructing the lead came so that the inside corner looks like a
perfect corner.
These panels were leaded with 1/2 inch lead came and 1/4 inch lead
came. This differentiation in the size of the cames used adds a lot to
the design, and is an example what an artisan can do with lead came
that he or she could not do with copper foil (the other method for
holding the glass pieces together).
In 2019, I was aksed to create another version of these French doors.
