This beveled glass window
was commissioned for a master bathroom in a home being remodeled.
Because it is mounted right over the bathtub, the artwork had to be
totally private. The clients wanted some beveled glass in the design,
so I suggested the bevel cluster you see here in the center of the
window. Beveled glass is often not very private because while the
beveled edge distorts the image, adding some privacy, the face of each
bevel (the part that is not beveled) is clear glass with no texture
whatsoever, and if these faces are big enough, the privacy is reduced
significantly. In this cluster of bevels, the glass pieces are thin so
the beveled edge on one side of the piece meets the beveled edge on the
other side of the piece. This means there is no face at all so this is
the most private that bevels can be. The only not-too-private pieces in
this artwork are the four circle bevels, but they are only two inches
across, which means the face on each one is only one inch across.
I make a lot of custom stained glass and beveled glass artworks that
are mounted in bathrooms and in or next to a front door. These two
settings often need a significant amount of privacy; the amount depends
on which way these windows face and how much viewing access the
neighbors will have. I always tell people that privacy is more about
whether you are comfortable that you cannot be seen than whether you
can actually be seen. In the artwork above, the choice of bevels and
the choice of clear textured glasses in the rest of the panel combine
to provide almost total privacy, certainly enough that the homeowners
never have to be uncomfortable with the idea that they might be visible
to the outside world.
The photo to the right shows this privacy
beveled glass bathroom window mounted above the bathtub. It is a poor
photo because I neglected to turn on the camera's flash when taking the
photo, which would have showed the bathroom interior better.
